Underrated Movie of the Week
Erin Brockovich, 2000, dir. Steven Soderbergh, starring Julia Roberts, Albert Finney, Aaron Eckhart, Conchata Ferrell, Pat Skipper, Jack Gill and Marg Helgenberger
Julia winning the Oscar was the worth thing to happen for this (amazing) movie. Shame.
One of my favourite movies, it's actually in my top 50 somewhere.
I just love movies about average people who are willing to stand up for the little guys, stick their necks out, and see results. I love redemption movies. And this had humour. It was just completely entertaining, inspirational and enjoyable.
I love this movie, I do, it's one of Soderbergh's best, and if it's on TV I will sit through it every time, and it makes me like my arch-nemesis Marg Helgenberger, that last scene with her makes me cry every damned time, but... BUT! Julia STOLE that trophy from Ellen Burstyn, who gave what I consider one of the finest performances EVER in Requiem For A Dream.
Ugh. I hate it when typos scream out at me the next day. Julia winning the oscar was the WORST thing.
I prefered Ellen Burstyn that year, but Roberts was a very worthy second place getter for me and I have no issues with her winning the Oscar, but now everyone speaks of this movie as Julia's Oscar movie and as nothing else. Shame.
How often do you hear about it though? You always hear (rightfully) about Requiem for a Dream and Ellen Burstyn, but these days whenever Erin is brought up I'm surprised to hear so many people (online people) say that it was just a way for Julia to win an Oscar and blah blah blah.
Best Picture nod doesn't exclude movies from being under/overrated.

Stale Popcorn, noun, 1. A veritable cornucopia of movie geekdom, celebrity worship, Australian film discussion and all with occasional musical interludes! All wrapped up in the salty buttery taste of movie popcorn that's been sitting in the box for too long. What's not to love?

Who would've thought a Best Picture nominee could be underrated...

I'm one of the few who think Roberts was better than Burstyn. I just thought hers was a better overall performance.
Yeah, how is this underrated? It got nominated for best picture and won best actress (without even really deserving to).
It's not underrated just cause people think of Julia first. Julia just got the film more attention.
