Silverchair Are Back

So, I've mentioned it before, but one of my professions is a music reviewer for a street press in my city called Forte. It's all music and movies and entertainment and gigs and stuff like that. I write reviews of singles and albums - that's why I could do such a comprehensive year-end list. My room is overflowing with compact discs!

So today I was in the office picking up some CDs (I got, amongst others, Madonna's Confessions Tour CD/DVD so that's $30 saved!) and I saw the new Silverchair single. I didn't take it originally because it looked so fancy and such. But then my boss told me I could take it. It looks snazzy. It came in a metal tin (photos below) and... well, I suppose Silverchair deserve it, right? They are after all one of the greatest groups of the last decade - You wanna argue that? Don't. You'll lose.

There's only one track on it, and that is "Straight Lines". This is the first song to be released from their highly anticipated upcoming new CD (five years in the making) called Young Modern. And, well, the song is pretty darn phenomenal. All epic rock and souring vocals. Daniel Johns' voice has just matured so much over the last couple of albums. Sure, it won't appeal to the people who want artists to continue making the exact same record over and over again. But if you've heard their debut album, then you can tell how far they've come. I appreciate them much more nowadays than I did back then. The song is 4 minutes 18 seconds, but goes by so fast. So, yeah, if this is a sample of Young Modern then colour me excited.

I took some photos on my camera. Dodgy quality I know, but 'tev. Click them to see larger versions.

The back of the tin reads:

"Straight Lines" is the first new Silverchair song to be unleashed since the trio's landmark 2002 album "Diorama". It's been nearly 5 years in the making but, it's been well worth the wait.

From a brooding beginning it gradually unfolds itself into a climax full of epic riffs and irrestistible melodies. It's signature Silverchair, combining the trio's unparalleled knack for a lean rock track with the musical inventiveness that has defined their more recent work.

Even after selling six million CDs, four #1 albums and 39 ARIA nominations over the last 12 years, this is clearly the sound of three invigorated 27-year-olds; an important band with a point to prove.

Produced by Silverchair's frontman, Daniel Johns, along with Nick Launay (Midnight Oil, Talking Heads, INXS, The Living End) and mixed by "Diorama" producer David Bottrill (Tool, King Crimson, Peter Gabriel), "Straight Lines" is the first taste of Silverchair's highly anticipated new album "Young Modern", which will be unveiled on March 31, 2007.

It's a song for the "desperate believers"... then and now... young and modern.

I do enjoy the new song (although I didn't love Diorama) but it seems like it's The Daniel Johns Band more than Silverchair right now. He's a talented guy, though, don't get me wrong. And I do hope The Dissociatives do something new.

The Dissociatives album was sorta crap except for a few songs. "Young Man" "Somewhere down the barrel" and "horror with eyeballs".

I'd much prefer a band to be the musical outlet for a genius than have more identikit bands with no personality whatsoever.

I liked most of it... Although that whistling one was a bit annoying.

What about Thinking In Reverse?

Hmm. I haven't really listened to the cd more than once, and those three songs are the only one on iTunes. Maybe I should relisten to it?
