The Fountain
I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn't that. What a strange, beguiling creature. Fascinating and frustrating at the same time. Mysterious and hidden, yet exposed and open. It's as if it's a medical patient. It was once a fully developed person (the Brad Pitt version) yet now it sits on the operating table, getting opened and investigated - it's heart out in the open... I think we're better for it.

I honestly can't imagine this film with Brad Pitt. Jackman ripped my heart out and stomped on it, and then stitched it up and gave it back to me. And then made me all horny.
Whatever else you thought of it, you have to admit that Jackman in Fountain = God.
Also, see it again. It gets better.
Really, I can't see either Brad or Cate. Hugh and Rachel totally own it now. I thought they were perfect.
I need to see it again...
Wish I'd seen it a second time in the theater. Need to check and see if it's still playing anywhere, maybe I will go this weekend.
And I agree - I can't imagine Pitt or Blanchett in it at all. It would've been such a different movie, and I love it the way it turned out. Weird and small and wholly personal. Lovely.
I need to watch it again. Excellent movie.
Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz both were heartbreaking. Two masterful performances.
If it had been made with Pitt and Blanchett with Jackman/Weisz once in the running, I'm sure we'd all be saying the same thing. ;)
Loved Jackman, was indifferent to Weisz's reading (then again, I don't think any actor could pull off such a bizarre part.)
I'd love to hear more on your thoughts soon, Glenn.
BTW Glenn, have you been keeping up with my "debate" with Kris on his blog lately (re: the post on his "Dreamgirls" gloating.) Man oh man, it's absolutely mind-boggling, I can't believe it.
I'm the user "prophyle".
I wasn't that in love with Weisz as I was with Jackman. I can actually imagine Cate in it, but not Brad. I think, quite literally, that Brad Pitt would be embarassing in it. But, hmmph, that's a thing of the past.
Pitt WOULD be embarrassing. It's just not his kind of role. Not to say Jackman is better in general (I could see him being embarrassing in certain things that Pitt can pull off), but Pitt would just be way wrong for it. And Jackman is perfect.
OK, maybe Jackman is better in general.
But anyway, I could sort of see Blanchett in Weisz's part. But I think Weisz did astonishingly well with the part. It really plays to her strengths. I read in an interview that Aronofsky really didn't wanna cast Weisz (his girlfriend), and she didn't wanna do it, but Jackman suggested it, and then they all noticed the great chemistry and couldn't deny that it was right.
