The Emmy Nominations

So, once again, the Emmys are at once fascinating and frustrating. Fascinating that they would nominate certain things while snubbing others, yet frustrating that they continue to nominate crap while completely ignoring brilliance.

Outstanding Comedy Series
Arrested Development
Curb Your Enthusiasm
The Office
Scrubs
Two and the Half Men

I applaud them for not nominating "Desperate Housewives", which has had an up-and-down second season, but "Two and a Half Men"?? What the fuck? There are better sitcoms on than that! The others four are great nom's though and I can't complain.

Oustanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Steve Carell - The Office
Larry David - Curb Your Enthusiasm
Kevin James - King of Queens
Tony Shalhoub - Monk
Charlie Sheen - Two and the Half Men

Ugh. You're kidding me right. Can they just give Carell the Emmy NOW! Seriously. Without people such as Zach Braff, Jason Lee and Jason Bateman this category is ridiculous. KEVIN JAMES? What is so good about that performance? Especially now after something like 5 seasons of no nominations. This category is pathetic. Give Carell the Emmy now and save us the bother.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Stockard Channing - Out of Practice
Jame Kazmarek - Malcolm in the Middle
Lisa Kudrow - The Comeback
Julia Louis-Dreyfus - The New Adventures of Old Christine
Debra Messing - Will & Grace

What. The. Fug. ??? They'll nominate Channing for anything, I swear! Kazmarek is done, as is Messing and Kudrow's show never even made it here (nor did Channings for that matter, so I really shouldn't judge). Go Julia Louis-Dreyfus!!!! This series premiered here last night and it was definitely one of the better sitcoms to come along in a while. I hope she wins. It's a criminal shame that she only won one Emmy for "Seinfeld" when she created one of THE Top 5 TV characters EVER (in my book). Actually, make that Top 3. I'd need to think that over. Anyway. Where the hell are the "Gilmore" girls? I thought this new voting system was meant to help people like that? Sarah Chalke for "Scrubs"? Or, hell. Even one of the "Desperate Housewives" - the writing may have gone down but the acting is still great. Maybe they were as turned off about the storylines they were given too. Hmmm.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Will Arnett - Arrested Development
Bryan Cranston - Malcolm in the Middle
Jon Cryer - Two and a Half Men
Sean Hayes - Will & Grace
Jeremy Piven - Entourage

Hahah, that was nice of them two nominate Gob from "Development", but Jon Cryer and Bryan Cranston? YAWN. Sean Hayes, yeah, I can live with that - he is still funny, and Piven is apparently good (Entourage is on cable here so I can't watch it).

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Cheryl Hines - Curb Your Enthusiasm
Megan Mullalley - Will & Grace
Elizabeth Perkins - Weeds
Jaime Pressly - My Name is Earl
Alfre Woodard - Desperate Housewives

ALFRE WOODARD? The single worst thing about "Desperate Housewives"' second season? Blech. "Weeds" hasn't come to Australia yet, so I'm going for Cheryl Hines! She's a hoot on "Enthusiasm"

Outstanding Reality Competition Program
The Amazing Race
American Idol
Dancing with the Stars
Project Runway
Survivor

I wish I could watch "Project Runway" but alas, I have to make do with one of my favourite shows ever - "The Amazing Race" all the way, baby.

Outstanding Drama Series
Grey's Anatomy
House
The Sopranos
24
The West Wing

"The West Wing" again! Thankfully it's off the air now so it can't get anymore nominations after this year! I don't watch "24" or "The Sopranos" (the former because I got over that show after the second season, and the latter because it's programming is so sporadic over here, you're lucky to get two episodes in a row) and "House" doesn't interest me so I'm going for "Grey's Anatomy", probably my favourite show on right now. But, seriously... WHERE IS SIX FEET UNDER??? (I give it italics because it deserves it!) It's unfathomable that this missed out for it's final (and greatest) season. Just a travesty of Emmy-voting justice. There is no other way to say this, but: The Emmy voters didn't do their job. Every critic will tell you Six Feet Under deserved to be nommed and that it didn't is just pathetic. Disgraceful. I'd also bemoan the lack of "Veronica Mars" but I knew that wasn't gonna get nommed. But they easily could've nominated "The Closer" (i loved it when the SAG awards nominated that show for ensemble). Way to go though on not nominated that hopeless lost cause "Lost".

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Peter Krause - Six Feet Under
Denis Leary - Rescue Me
Christopher Meloni - Law & Order: SVU
Martin Sheen - The West Wing
Kiefer Sutherland - 24

Loving the first three nominations (I haven't seen "Rescue Me" but at least they nominated something different) - and yes, Meloni's nod is definitely deserved. But where is Gandolfini? Where is Michael C Hall who did his finest acting during Six Feet Under's final season.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Frances Conroy - Six Feet Under
Geena Davis - Commander in Chief
Mariska Hargitay - Law & Order: SVU
Allison Janney - The West Wing
Kyra Sedgewick - The Closer

No Edie Falco? Strange - the few episodes I've seen, Falco always impressed. And for Janney/Davis too! How bizarre. Conroy completely deserves this nod and hopefully the win. How has she NOT won this yet? If she doesn't win, I hope it's Sedgewick, you got the role of her career in "The Closer" (I wish Channel 9 would bring that back - that show was excellent).

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Alan Alda - The West Wing
Michael Imperioli - The Sopranos
Gregory Itzin - 24
Oliver Platt - Huff
William Shatner - Boston Legal

Wow, I don't watch any of these shows. I occasionally watch "Boston Legal" (it's on before "Scrubs") but Candice Bergan is clearly the best bit about that show. God... as always, the supporting actor category is a boring bust.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Candice Bergan - Boston Legal
Blythe Danner - Huff
Sandra Oh - Grey's Anatomy
Jean Smart - 24
Chandra Wilson - Grey's Anatomy

Surely this will go to Sandra Oh(!). She won the Globe and the SAG, now the Emmy. Way to go Sandra! I feel so happy knowing I loved you BEFORE "Grey's Anatomy" (in Dancing at the Blue Iguana (#75 on the Best Performances of the 2000s countdown), Under the Tuscan Sun and thought she was second-best in show in Sideways, not to mention the couple of "Arli$$" episodes I watched. Bergan is uber-cool and am loving the Chandra Wilson nomination! But Jean Smart and Blythe Danner I don't watch.

But here is where I think I want to explode. There was one ladie's performance over the last year that I would qualify as one of my favourites of all time (including both film and tv) and yet she failed to get a nomination, despite a well of great work. I speak of course of...

LAUREN AMBROSE

I. Am. Speechless.

Two other categories of immense interest is:

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie
Gillian Anderson - Bleak House
Kathy Bates - Ambulence Girl
Annette Bening - Mrs Harris
Judy Davis - A Little Thing Called Murder
Helen Mirren - Elizabeth I

I predict Annette Bening will win the Academy Award for Best Actress... only if she wins here. Because if she wins here she could start the ball rolling. She wins here, then a globe, then a SAG then an Oscar. I know it's for a different movie (Mrs Harris on tv, Running With Scissors on film) but it's happened to other people (Liza Minelli pops into mind (an Emmy, a Globe and Oscar all in succession), George Clooney another) where one project leads to another which leads to big prizes. But look at the other women! This lineup beats most Oscar lineups. What is Judy Davis doing here AGAIN! Helen Mirren! Gillian Anderson! Kathy Bates! *sigh*...

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie
Ellen Burstyn - Mrs Harris
Shirley Jones - Hidden Places
Cloris Leachman - Mrs Harris
Kelly Macdonald - The Girl in the Cafe
Alfre Woodard - The Water is Wild

Look at these women! Burstyn, Woodard, Leachman, Jones! All being relegated to tv movies. Oh well, at least they're getting nominated (couldn't they have awarded Woodard once in this category and given her Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series nomination to someone else? Especially considering SHE'S NO FUNNY on the program).

Also of note, The 78th Annual Academy Awards got a nomination. I'm also loving the nomination for "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List" (way to go Kathy!!)

Okay! That's all.

I absolutely loved this rundown. I swear, if you decide to run an Emmy live-blog (live-blogging? is that the word?) I'll follow it.

The Miniseries or Movie lists are awesome - pure movie star gold, and I have my fingers crossed for Ellen Burstyn.

So happy Kudrow and Dreyfus were nominated, love them both. I love Jean Smart from "24", too.

Great rundown (even if I disagree about Lost).

I also am dying to see Annette Bening win (even though I love Mirren and Bates-even Davis & Anderson are great). Can't wait to see if this is the year for Oscar.

And, as for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, I have no idea who will win this. Will it be the boring Messing (tried and true), the boring Kaczmarek (she's never won-a swan song trophy), or one of the first-timers (I'm personally rooting for Kudrow).

I think Kudrow will probably win, I've heard she's great. If not her, then Kaczmarek in the swan song vote (they've already awarded Debra Messing).

I personally am rooting for Geena Davis in the drama category, just cause I love her and am addicted to her show, and don't watch any of the others. I think she's got a shot.

I don't think this is Annette Bening's year for the oscar. I am thinking Winslet. But who knows. Will Annette be comedy at the globes? if so, she's got Streep and Beyoncé to deal with. That will be one weird race.

Even though I haven't seen most of the shows I find it hard to believe Marcia Cross doesn't deserve a nomination. In the suicide episode she was AMAZING. And Woodard?! Ugh. Crazy.

Also, where is Lost?
