Hold On For One More Day

Inspired by an entry at OMG Blog, I thought I'd take a look at the video clip for Wilson Phillips' 1990 blockbuster hit "Hold On". Remember it? Of course you do! It was only the biggest song in the history of the world (or, for just 1990). I love this song so much. I remember back in 1990 (when I was 5/6) I was addicted to this song so much. I believe I had it on cassette tape and I taped the video onto a VHS tape just so I could watch it over and over again too. It was amazing.

Only watching the video now do I realise that Chynna Phillips was really lipsyncing the hell out of it (so fierce!) and watching the video now I have the jokes about Carnie Wilson in my brain from over the last 17 years. At the time it didn't occur to me that she looks sort of out of place at the beach in an all black number, but oh well.

The very best bit (and there were many many great bits) in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle! was the "Hold On" singalong sequence that aped the "Bohemian Rhapsody" sequence from Wayne's World. Man, why wasn't Harold & Kumar a hit? It was hilarious!!

I blame the video for "Hold On" as well as the video for Julian Lennon's "Salt Water" (out around the same time) with starting my still-going obsession with the American landscape. All those trees and mountains and such. Lord knows why, but oh well.

Okay. Why is that you in Australia admire and marvel the landscape of America, while I (for lack of a better phrase) "have taken it for granted" and much prefer the beauty of the British Isles or Japan? Is that normal, to look out at the beauty of other nations and not specifically your own?

And yes, after disproving a giant flaming eye I'm in a "deep" and "zombie/asleep" mode.

See, the British/Scottish/Irish land sort of makes me depressed.

I was meant to be going back to America later this year (now postponed indefinitely) and I had intended on taking a tour through the country. It would have been so great to see it with my eyes and not through a TV or cinema screen. Places like the Rockies and all those little towns that sort of look like Twin Peaks and all those giant national parks.

It's not just me though. Just take a look at anything by Wim Wenders once he moved to America. Or the upcoming Wong Kar Wai My Blueberry Nights. Something about the Americana is striking to me and many others.

Who knows why. It just is.

That "the" obviously doesn't need to be there before the word Americana.

Bruce Springsteen is in love with Americana. Maybe that's why he's my favourite music artists ever?

Carnie's the only one who isn't totally over-acting it.

And...ech, their voices sound so over-produced.

I thought Brokeback Mountain had some very beautiful American landscape in it, in the early scenes. Not just visually but the entire atmosphere was to me beautiful. Made me sigh.
