Shawshank

I could seriously watch this movie over and over and over. I love it so much. Everything about it is brilliant. I can understand how people don't like it as much as other people, but I'd like to know why the people who hate it do so. Hmm. Yeah, I rewatched The Shawshank Redemption last night (and the last 30 minutes of it again today because it's that good) because for some reason Thomas Newman's score kept popping up when I put iTunes on Shuffle. I just can't get enough of this movie, really. The two hours really do fly by (I am always shocked to realise the movie is just over the two hour mark actually). As evidenced by the sidebar, I have seen it a lot. Ten of those times were due to my year 12 high school media studies class where we had to study that and another prison movie, the polar opposite (quality wise), Murder in the First starring Kevin Bacon and Christian Slater (versus Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. No contest.) Typically, I aced the essay we had to do for it. :P

Lastly, I found it slightly amusing that I chose to watch Shawshank on the Easter weekend, considering it has incredibly obvious Christ analogies (put in prison for another man's sin, being reborn from a dark stone prison.)

Anyway. LOVE it.

i love this movie too...and never really thought about it for it's Christ analogies...

but those types of themes...redemption, taking the punishment for another, etc. are always very moving.

Are you suffering through Prison Break? I suppose i should dig Shawshank out and watch it again... or was it the Green Mile that i enjoyed? Tom Hanks? Hmm what the world needs are more american prison movies... not. i enjoy your critical stance and movie passion... do get outside once and awhile for some fresh air!

I think I am one of those people who really doesn't like Shawshank. I only saw it once a few years ago, but I remember it bothering me the same way Road to Perdition and Crash bothered me. Like, I can recognize the good qualities in them, but the movies themselves just really annoy me. Too obvious, trying too hard, thinks it's better than it is, etc. I think Shawshank was more like Road to Perdition in that regard.

Sorry. I just don't it : ( Watching that film and then Dead Man Walking, it's just like night and day.

I should see it again, though.

p.s. see The Host whenever you can; it's brilliant.

Barry. I'll do a little post of them this week sometime.

Adam, I guess I don't get that way of looking at it at all. For me it doesn't seem like it's trying to hard, like it's not trying to be some big Oscar baiting movie. But, to each their own I guess.

Williamw, I don't watch Prison Break. And, er, I get plenty of fresh air. That was an odd thing to say.

Oh, and I really liked Dead Man Walking too, but The Shawshank Redemption makes me happy that I'm alive.

Okay, I'm far too lazy to return to the post I originally commented, so I'll just do it here.

It scares me! We all must write to Dawn Ostroff IMMEDIATELY and help save it from the Arrested Development curse. It's just too tragic. How can shlock like Pussycunt Dolls: Search for the Next STD still be on TV and this be in trouble? Ah, disgraceful =P.
