Wow. I'm so glad I watched Deepa Mehta's Water last night. What a wonderful, rich and tragic film. Mesmerising throughout. I wanna see the other films in Mehta's "Elemental Trilogy" (Earth and Fire I believe). Lead actress Sarala gives a wonderful debut performance and Lisa Ray is fine also. But the performance of the film is clearly Seema Biswas. That final scene! Wow. And, also, it helps to have this guy called John Abraham to look at for two hours. I'd never heard of him before, but my understanding is that he has a huge Bollywood following. No Wonder. Anyway. Water? B+
I really hope this gets an Oscar nomination for Foreign Language Film. Like, really.

i liked the movie too...although sometimes i wanted it to go a little faster...
it seems to have good buzz though for the academy nomination.
Problematic, but nice effort from Mehta, a wildly inconsistent director in my eyes. It has some issues re: the East/West dichotomy about women's rights, but I think fine performances, good cinematography and a rich score balance out the sketchiness of representation. Glad you liked it.
Also, regarding John Abraham: he's actually decent here, considering the majority of his Bollywood perfs are atrocious (and that's putting it kindly.) I heard Mehta wants him on-board for her next film, so that's a good sign.
Seema Biswas is one of my favourite Indian actors presently - you should see Shekhar Kapur's Bandit Queen, in which she's flat-out brilliant too. Sarala was awesome too, especially considering she does not speak Hindi and had to learn her lines phonetically (sp?).

I love Water, too. And I agree with you point for point. Seema Biswas is brilliant and that John Abraham! Woof.
"Fire" is by far the best of Mehta's trilogy. Check it out, by all means!
