Poster Goodies

[Click all to enlarge]

*sigh* I wish directors held more clout with audiences these days. I mean, I know there's the usual suspects - Spielberg, Scorsese - who's movies seem to sell themselves, but it's rare to see a poster (or a trailer) that actively touts it's director as a legend. I know Altman has died so this postumus poster for A Prairie Home Companion is trying to get some extra patrons, but I was randonly looking at the page of Michaelangelo Antonioini's Blow-Up and the tagline was "Michelangelo Antonioni's first British film". We're not gonna see Wong Kar-Wai's My Blueberry Nights hailed as such, are we? I mean, everyone knows we're in a time of celebrity worship where non-celebrities and non-actors are given more attention to good ones, but I want the old style back when the director was just as important as Jennifer Aniston or Cameron Diaz. Blah.

Umm... check out the other designs for the new Anne Hathaway film, Becoming Jane about Jane Austen. And then compare and contrast with 2005's Keira Knightley Austen adaptation Pride & Prejudice. Now that we've got that out of the way, what are the chances that this is finally the film to get Anne Hathaway some awards attention for herself after being all but ignored for Brokeback Mountain and The Devil Wears Prada? Not sure, but we'll see.

Next to the Tarantino/Rodriguez collab Grindhouse, Black Snake Moan has the most interesting poster set of a 2007 release so far. Whose interest isn't piqued by seeing a sweaty Samuel L Jackson and Christina Ricci covered in chains with that wonderful tagline "EVERYTHING IS HOTTER IN THE SOUTH"? My only concern is that it has JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE in it. Umm... say what?

Good grief! When I glimpsed the Becoming Jane poster in this entry, I assumed it was the Pride and Prejudice one-sheet - that's how similar they look to me! It's only when I actually read your commentary that it clicked. What a blatant rip-off! (Even though it does look pretty and Hathaway/McAvoy = hotness.)

Wait, is that James McAvoy in the poster? Or some other McAvoy?

Yeah, there's definitely some stealing going on here. But I think it's allowed, as long as it's a good movie. I mean, it's about Jane Austen. They're pretty similar, as films go.

I mean, it's not like lame Northy Country's poster ripping off the maverick genius that was Dogville. At least I don't think it is. We'll see.

Yeah, they picked a pretty poster to copy from at least, but still... but, i mean - even the colours are the same! The beigey colour with the simple font and the sunlighting.

Oh well.
