At last! A critics group thinking for themselves

Let us all praise Austin, Texas!

They gave Best Actress to Ellen Page for Hard Candy (the first critics group in all of America to not give their prize to Helen Mirren), Best Actor to Leonardo DiCaprio, Original Screenplay for Pan's Labyrinth, Alfonso Cuaron winning Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Children of Men, This Film is Not Yet Rated for Best Documentary (that's a first too), Brick for Best First Feature, A Scanner Darkly for Best Picture and their Top 10 includes Brick, The Fountain and The Prestige!

Austin is my favourite critics group now. It's about time somebody stopped with the ubiquitous Forest Whitaker/Helen Mirren stuff. I doubt by the time I get to give out the UMAs that Helen Mirren will even be in my top 5! There's already at least two above her, possibly three - I'm still not sure who I prefer out of Mirren or Laura Linney (for Jindabyne).

Hmm. Oh well.

Fantastic. I was wondering why Page wasn't being more honoured. And also Brick. Even the Independant Spirit awards are ignoring Hard Candy and Brick!

Actually, Brick was up for awards last year I believe because it was on the 2005 festival circuit.

Marvelous, it's great to see a list without the standard usual suspects. I love that Alfonso Cuaron got two awards here. If the heavens align correctly and there is justice in the world, he will be take that fifth director's spot at les Oscars.

I guess I'll have to watch Hard Candy now.

Praise them in deed! Certainly the great Page will be a final nominee at my annual Film Awards. She was so freaking intense and scary. She made my balls hurt during the castration scene. Ouch.

Aaand thank you for using spoiler tags.

I think it's much more likely that Cuaron will just get a screenplay nod instead. There's more space there.

And Mirren will most likely be in my top 5. But seriously, all that awardage makes me not want to give her any more awards even if I did think she was worthy. I haven't even seen Dench or Winslet or Dern or Watts, though, so who knows...

Exactly. She's my third/fourth atm and I haven't seen (from my assumption - most likely to be a fan of) Dern, Mol, Dench, Watts, Lee, Kidman, Paige, Miller, Winslet, Li...

I highly doubt she'll be in my top 5. Possibly even top 10.

That's not to say she gives a bad performance, it just shows what a strong year it has been for female actors.

I have a feeling Winslet's gonna be my favorite this year. If only her film were playing anywhere in the tri-state area...
