Oscar/Departed Thought

So, I'm not entirely sure yet what the whole deal with The Departed is and who's going in what category, but it appears that after a brief dallience with Lead Actor Jack Nicholson will indeed go for Supporting Actor. Some people have said that everyone is going Supporting, which would be intriguing, but I doubt it (especially since there are definite leads in DiCaprio and Damon). So if DiCaprio gets nommed for Lead (seems likely unless he gets vote splitting issues) and Nicholson gets nommed for Supporting that seems about right.

BUT. Have a look at the supporting actor contenders. There's Nicholson, Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine) and Eddie Murphy (Dreamgirls) in the main teir, then Michael Sheen (The Queen) right after them. Then after him there's a bunch of actors such as Ben Affleck (Hollywoodland), Tobey Maguire (The Good German), Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada) and James McAvoy (The Last King of Scotland). However, I think there is another man who is gonna get a nomination. A man who is very well liked yet has never gotten an Academy Award nomination. He has a smaller role in a Martin Scorsese movie than some of his rivals. The man I am talking about is Martin Sheen.

And if anyone doubts me, consider this.

Older respected actor, never been Oscar-nominated. Small role in a Scorsese film. I'd bet Martin Sheen gets in over Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin or whoever else they're trying to push into the fray.

Of course, I don't have any idea if it'll happen, but at the present time I am predicting it will.

Martin Sheen won't happen... Alan Alda had no internal competition, for one thing. It's much harder to get into a category when someone else from your film is a much stronger bet in the same category.

Also, you're forgetting about Brad Pitt.
