So, it's gonna be great to see Marty up on stage accepting the Best Director award (or, at the moment, it looks like it's gonna pan out that way), but it's still kinda annoying that it's for The Departed, a movie I liked but didn't love and that whenever people ask me if it's good I say "yeah..." but I don't even seem to think I sound credible. I did like it, but unlike, say, GoodFellas it hasn't stuck with me in the slightest.
People are saying they reckon Jack Nicholson could win another Oscar for this movie, but I think, if he can manage the nomination, that the award is going to Alan Arkin. Let us remember he has two nominations already (way back in the '60s) and is clearly well liked in general and in Little Miss Sunshine (and the film is liked in general too). Plus, they like rewarding old geezers in Supporting Actor almost as much as they like rewarding young hotties in Supporting Actress.
And now onto people being hypocrits. Casino Royale has a 95% score at Rotten Tomatoes. 95%. But, of course, it's only James Bond so critics won't give it any prizes and the Academy won't take notice - yet they'll all heap prizes on Scorsese's The Departed simply because it's Scorsese and it's Nicholson. Like, it's got fist fights, gun shots, blood. It's not like the Academy is known to reward that stuff in recent years.
...oh well. Such is life. It's 4.15am and I'm not tired and I'm hungry and I might go watch Ruthless People, which I taped earlier tonight when it was on TV.

I really hope Arkin doesn't get nominated. Or win, god forbid.
I thought he was adequate at best in his role, and sometimes verging on annoying; the weak link in a pretty good cast.
I prefered Carell, but I did like Arkan. I wish he had been nominated a few years back for Thirteen Conversations about One Thing.
Arkin will probably be nominated, but he definitely won't win, not with Jack, Brad, and Eddie in the mix.
I too thought he gave the least impressive performance in the cast (though I loved all of them), so I'd be pretty annoyed if he were the only one to score a nom.
