AFI + Sundance Competition

The Australian Film Institute is giving one person (Aussie residents only, folks) the chance to win a trip to the Sundance Film Festival in January! All you have to do is SMS your favourite of the AFI Acting Nominee's name along with your name, state and phone number to 1974 4482, or head to The AFI Reader's Choice Website. The categories included are the Best lead male and female in film and television as well as Best Performance in Television Comedy. So no supporting nominees. There will also be a runner up from each state who will win a $6000 home entertainment package (which I'd actually sorta prefer than a trip to a washed up film festival surrounded by snow.)

The contenders you can choose from are:

Heath Ledger (Candy)

Gabriel Byrne (Jindabyne)

Shane Jacobson (Kenny)

Steve Le Marquand (Last Train to Freo)

Teresa Palmer (2:37)

Abbie Cornish (Candy)

Laura Linney (Jindabyne)

Emily Barclay (Suburban Mayhem)

David Wenham (Answered by Fire)

Dan Wyllie (Love My Way)

Charles Passi (R.A.N.)

Richard Roxburgh (The Silence)

Claudia Karvan (Love My Way)

Asher Keddie (Love My Way)

Susie Porter (R.A.N.)

Justine Clarke (The Surgeon)

Andrew Hansen (The Chaser's War on Everything)

Paul McCarthy (Comedy Inc.)

Genevieve Morris (Comedy Inc.)

Kris McQuade (Supernova)

Entries close 3pm next Thursday (as in Thursday the 7th of December), the day before the AFI Awards are held.

Apparently Rolf de Heer & Peter Djigirr's Ten Canoes is the odds on favourite to take out Best Film. It's at $1.75 at Sportingbet. Ray Lawrence's Jindabyne is at $4, Clayton Jacobson's Kenny at $6 (odd, considering how phenomenally popular it is. It's out this week on DVD I believe) and Neil Armfield's Candy at $8.

Heath Ledger could very well head back to Brooklyn (he's coming to the ceremony) with three statues. One for his performance in Candy, another for his performance in Brokeback Mountain and the Reader's Choice.

"huh?" ???

And yeah, it is. I hope I win the entertainment package. I couldn't care less about Sundance. Doesn't that festival only ever have, like, one good movie a year?

I'm not sure how I feel about that. I think if you win my face would be the physical representation of "OMG!!!!11" whatever that may be (we'll find out soon, perhaps)
