BEST BREAKTHROUGH - PERFORMANCE
Orlando Bloom - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and Black Hawk Down
Jake Gyllenhaal - Donnie Darko & October Sky
Audrey Tautou - Amelie & Venus Beauty Institute
Jonathan Tucker - The Deep End & 100 Girls
Naomi Watts - Mulholland Drive

GOLD:
Naomi Watts - Mulholland Drive

SILVER:
Jake Gyllenhaal - Donnie Darko & October Sky
BRONZE:
Audrey Tautou - Amelie & Venus Beauty Institute

Note - At the time, I thought Bloom was quite a find. Alas, that didn't pan out. Tucker is just a cutie and while Gyllenhaal had October Sky and Tautou had Venus Beauty Institut (both in 1999) I only saw those films and their 2001 breakthrough films in 2001, so I included them. Watts is understandable though, right?

BEST BREAKTHROUGH - FILMMAKING
Jonathan Glazer - Sexy Beast
Steve Jacobs - La Spagnola
Robert Luketic - Legally Blonde
Daniel Minahan - Series 7: The Contenders
John Cameron Mitchell - Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Honourable Mentions: Robert Connelly (The Bank)

GOLD:
Jonathan Glazer - Sexy Beast

SILVER:
Robert Luketic - Legally Blonde
BRONZE:
John Cameron Mitchell - Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Note - I had not seen "Birth" at the time of "Sexy Beast" so it just proved to be fortuitous that my gold went to a man who a couple of years later made one of my all-timers. The other two I rewarded have since given us a) not much good or b) not much at all. We'll see how they go. Steve Jacobs is finally making a second film, which is good considering how visually ripe "La Spagnola" was. I look forward to it.

SILVER:
Bertha Mills, Played by Fionulla Flanigan in The Others
BRONZE:
Mr Roque, Played by Michael Anderson in Mulholland Drive
(I'm still not entirely sure as to whether Mr Roque is even a villain, but he's certainly played as a villain and he seems to have a hand in many pots, so...)

Lola (Lola Marceli) in La Spagnola

This is Cal (17 years after I started reading this post).

Seriously, massive respect for all those categories. Loved them. Mulholland all the way! Though not enough Gosford Park for my liking. Hmph :P

I'm just seeing this now, but kudos to you for handing Amenebar a director nod for The Others. His efforts on that film (director, screenwriter, composer) - so criminally underrated.
