Thought

Could Little Miss Sunshine win Best Picture now that it (shockingly) doesn't have to fight with Dreamgirls for the frivilous musical/comedy vote? And it has more acting support than The Departed and Iwo Jima, presumedely the two films that are in the lead for the trophy. But then Little Miss Sunshine doesn't have a Best Director nod.

Hmmm.

But then, The Departed and Babel are the only Best Picture nominees with Best Editing nominees, and we what happened last year with a Best Editing snubbee...

Aagh, I'm so baffled by some of these nominations (or, lack thereof)

I think it'll end up being Babel for Best Picture, The Departed for Best Director.

However, at this point, there's only one category that seems impossible to beat in the big six: Helen Mirren. Supporting categories are going to be wars between the Sunshiners and the Dreamgirls, Smith/O'Toole/DiCaprio smell blood in the water after Whitaker's crappy speech, and Marty will be considered vulnerable until he's clutching that Oscar.

I don't think Best Picture's going to Babel personally, although it's more of an inkling than anything else (it's a five-way race any way you slice it.) If so, what else would it win? Original Screenplay is going to Morgan (Arndt if not him), while Editing would be likey if Mirrione hadn't already won in that category a couple of years ago...

I think the most votes will be distributed amongst The Queen, Little Miss Sunshine and The Departed. Considering Marty and Mohanan have good shots for the latter, voters will feel freed to settle on the former two. Right now, I'd put my bets on The Queen.

Don't you love baseless speculation?

And if that were to happen, then The Queen would top off the night with four statuettes (Picture, Actress, Screenplay and Score.) Isn't that a likely scenario?

It is possible. Anything is possible. Even Letters from Iwo Jima becoming the first film to win Best Picture and nothing else since the 1930s. Wouldn't that be a riot!
