Jake Gyllenhaal is an UNCLE! (plus links)

oh... wait, this shouldn't be about Jakey Boy.

The name is Ramona, apparently. I hope the baby get's the Gyllenhaal genes, because if so, she's gonna be cute as a button. If not... then, well, we still have Jake to give us a hot heir.

Now, some quick links for y'all

Italy chooses their Best Foreign Language Film entrant. A movie called Nuovomondo (Golden Door) is directed by Emanuele Criaslese and is about a Sicilian family taking a voyage from their homeland to America.

Steve Zaillian wonders why nobody likes his movie All the King's Men (the second adaption of the book after the Best Picture winning version from 1949). For some reason, he can't understand why the critics hated it and why it won't even gross $10mil at the US box-office. Poor diddums. I'm sure that year you had to "fine tune" this mess didn't really work out well, hey? I remember saying over a year ago that this movie wasn't gonna hit as big as everyone was saying. I didn't see Penn getting Oscars for it, nor did I see it getting anything else. And then it got pushed back and I was was all smirky and then it died this year and I feel gratified. Seriously, I hated the idea of this movie from the second the desperate-for-oscars project was announced. Hopefully it can fuck off and rot on the shelves now, never to be mentioned ever again. "Maybe down the road I'll figure it out," he said. "We're all a bit shellshocked. I feel like Huey Long must have felt — you try to do good and they shoot you for it." lol. SHUT UP!

The fabo Ali reviews Mira Nair's The Namesake and Darren Aronofski's The Fountain.

RC continues his Oscar predictions. I will be doing some predictions tomorrow maybe.

The Scissor Sisters are awesome. How is it that a band can be #1 in the UK, Australia and various other countries, yet they can't crack the US? And now their CDs have been banned in several franchises because Jake Shears criticised the costs of albums. I was shocked the core to read this line: 'Ta-Dah' itself was being sold for $28.99.

...what? NO WAY! I did a bit of currency conversion and that equals $39 Australian. That is ridiculous. We don't even usually have to pay $29 for a CD in our currency. New release CDs are usually somewhere between $18-$25. My god. No wonder CD sales are down.

Ugh. Also, is it in poor taste that I had a really big urge to watch Witness? Like, I've never seen it but I've heard it's excellent and it just so happens that the day I went to the video store there was all this news about the Amish community and the gunman. My movie habits are quite odd sometimes. Completely inadvertantly, I recently watched United 93, Flying High! and Snakes on a Plane one after the other. I didn't mean to, it just happened that way.

Sorta like about a year ago when I was listening to my iPod and five songs about domestic violence all came on in a row. Like... wtf?

They were (if you were wondering) "I've Got to Go Now" (Toni Childs), "Hits So Hard" (Hole), "Still" (Macy Gray), "Girl" (Destiny's Child) and... I forget the last one. It freaked me out. Not only that they all came on one after another, but that I have so many songs about that subject. Eep.

Also, I sorta love the poster for Cocaine Cowboys, which is a documentary btw.

In even worse taste, I almost did my Today's Mood yesterday as Kelly McGillis in Witness. Thankfully I decided against it. But Witness was the first thing that popped into my mind too. I'm actually gonna do a post in a bit about a different horrible thing that this tragedy brought to mind...

I haven't bought a CD in a store in years. And those stores that Jake Shears was railing against have always had ridiculous prices and I've never bought anything at them and I have no clue who would ever be that stupid. I guess they're the only CD stores that open in small towns, though, so they were your only choice, before iTunes etc. Major rip-off, and good for Shears to call them on it. And I don't get why their albums don't hit here either. Ta-Dah is so great!

I suppose it's cause they're not crunk enough.

Thank you for the shout-out! But an "A" for Torch Song Trilogy? No, Glenn, no... please don't vex me so.

That wasn't supposed to rhyme, so no remarks about my dramatic writing style.

Ali, I really liked it! I don't really know why. I just did.

RC, I love predictions at this stage because by December/January everybody is pretty much in place except for a few.
