DVD Purchases

I've bought quite a few DVDs over the last couple of weeks. Essentially, because they were all so freakin' cheap! And I'm bored so I'm gonna do a post about them.

The Shawshank Redemption
God, how much do I love this movie? So Good! I know some of y'all don't like it, but I think it's very "masterpiece" worthy (it is for me). And even though I had to study this movie for media studies in high school required me to watch it about 30 times, I still love it - unlike the other movie I was forced to watch, Murder in the First with Kevin Bacon and Christian Slater. That was just horrible. This DVD was $12.95 so that's pretty awesome!

Cabaret
I still get completely confused when I think about how I really didn't like this movie that much when I originally saw it. Like... I absolutely love it now, so I don't know what happened. Maybe I've forced myself to like it? Who knows. But when the DVD is $6.95 I couldn't pass up the chance to buy it. I just wish they had a Special Edition of it!

They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
Okay, so I've never seen this movie, but I have really wanted to in forever. Actually, it was probably last Summer (my Summer) when Nat did that ill-fated actress project that he never completed where we had to see movies from a certain actress. I tried to make Jane Fonda my subject but could only get Klute (awesome) and 9 to 5 (omgawesome). This, unfortunately, illuded me. I've had it on my DVD queue for months but they never send it. So I decided to buy it when I saw it for $10.

Notorious
Like Horses, I've never seen this! This one is much more unexplainable considering I think Hitchcock is, like, the greatest director ever. Or, he at least made tonnes of movies I love. This title has been on my DVD queue for over a year and they just refuse to send it to me so I bought it. It was $10 and I'm sure I'll love it. Started to watch it last night, but I turned it off after a couple of minutes because it was 1.30am and I needed sleep.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
God, this movie is brilliant, right! Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor is probably my favourite cinematic pairing. Just brilliance. *sigh* and do NOT even get me started on how freakin' unbelievably hot Paul Newman was. And it was only $14.95

The Breakfast Club
I finally broke down and purchased this. I finally just realised that they're never going to release a better edition and that I may as well own this one for super cheap. It was only $10.95.

The Upside of Anger
I've wanted to buy this one for ages, but for some just never did. I saw it for $10 and finally decided to get it. Just watching Joan Allen is totally worth it! "Oh no no, I'm done toasting - I'm just ordering another drink."

The Wizard of Oz
Yay! I finally got it. Unfortunately, I didn't get the one with the cover where you press a certain spot Emerald City lights up and "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" starts up. But this was $12.95 so it's alright.

The Producers
Everytime I saw this at any store it was $30+ which was ridiculous, so when I saw it for $10 ex-rental at Blockbuster I got it. Why not? It was totally worth it. I liked this movie much more than most, but I don't care. It was a hoot and some of the musical numbers were great.

Poltergeist
Much like The Breakfast Club I've never purchased this because I always wanted an edition with, ya know, special features. Alas, I saw it really cheap ($6.95) and decided to just buy it. I mean, it's not like it's not a great movie!

I got the $10 ones from Dirty Cheap CDs in the city, and the rest are mostly from the JB Hi-Fi, which just opened here in Geelong, which meant cheap stock!

Yeah, I don't like Shawshank.

I also don't love 9 to 5 the way most people seem to... I thought of it as "B-" level kinda-funny-but-nothing-to-write-home-about quality. It just sorta dragged, I felt. No buoyancy.

I really don't get Jane Fonda. She really wasn't funny in 9 to 5. I guess I should see her in other stuff. She just seems strained to me.

9 to 5 is, like, so NOT the Jane Fonda show (it's all about the Parton and the Tomlin).

But the three other Fonda perfs I've seen - Klute, They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, On Golden Pond - are all magic. I'm not including Monster-in-Law though. Just cause.
