1991

I find 3/5 Picture/Director splits odd. I can understand 4/5 ones, but 3/5 strikes me as odd. Like, they're being all "we're better than you" by adding even more left-of-centre nominations. I suppose the 1991 race could easily come down to the fact that the director's branch thought Thelma & Louise would score a BP nomination instead of Beauty and the Beast, which if it had the split would be 4/5. Oh well. I just watched Barbra Streisand's The Prince of Tides and loved it to pieces. She scored a Globe nomination and a DGA nomination, yet no Academy nomination. I would think that if anyone was gonna have the honour of being only the second woman in history to get a Director nomination it would be someone such as Streisand, a previous Oscar winning actress helming a Best Picture nominee. Shame. That was a pretty good year for actresses though!

There was Thelma and Louise themselves (Geena David and Susan Sarandon), Jodie Foster (Silence of the Lambs), Bette Midler (For the Boys), Reese Witherspoon (The Man In the Moon), Linda Hamilton (Terminator 2), Barbra Streisand (The Prince of Tides), Anjelica Huston (The Addams Family) as well as performances that have so far been unseen by me including Academy Award nominee Laura Dern (Rambling Rose), Annette Bening (Bugsy), Michelle Pfeiffer (Frankie and Johnny), Ellen Barkin (Switch) and Kathy Bates (Fried Green Tomatoes) - all of which were Globe nominated.

Interesting to note in 1991 that Nicole Kidman received a Globe Supporting Actress nomination for Billy Bathgate.

Anyway, i'm tired and need to sleep.
