The Silence (2006, dir. Shortland) - Cate Shortland is a talented director, that's for sure. She has a great eye for visuals and a great ear for sound and music. But something about her films (her first was Somersault) just leave me wanting more. The story starts out good (detective realises one woman appearing in many old police crime scene photos) but then turns into a familiar one (detective must investigate what really happened to said woman who showed up dead many years ago). The performances are all adaquate - Shortland can get good performances out of her young cast, this time it's Emily Barclay (In My Father's Den), last time it was Abbie Cornish) but Richard Roxburgh, Essie Davis, Daniel de Montemas and Ella Scott Lynch are all just standard, no stand outs. The ending is a complete anti-climax with the murdering turning out to be someone we've learnt barely anything about and then it just sorta ends.
I can't help but feel that if this had been given some extra care and been given a theatrical treatment instead of it's tv movie credit then it could've been something more. C
