Unfortunately, Oscar-winning Production Designer Gretchen Rau passed away the other week due to a brain tumour.
While I occasionally knocked Memoirs of a Geisha's historically incorrect sets, they were pretty. Rau had an uncanny knack of being able to design contemporary films. Films such as What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, Six Degrees of Seperation, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Crocodile Dundee and Unbreakable amongst them, alongside period films Geisha, The Last Samurai, I.Q. and the upcoming The Good Shepherd could lead to a third posthumus nod. Talented lady who died too young. She'll be missed.
